Keep your readers glued - Make your Articles interesting enough. Do not be boring. If you can inject humor then do so.
Easy to Follow Site Navigation - It is important for your site visitors to know their way around your site. Keep it consistent, simple and visible to avoid confusion.
Site Map - This feature is useful in having higher chances to rank better in Search Engines.
Ask for Feedback or Site Review - It’s important to know what others think of your site. Be open to suggestions and consider implementing them.
“Above the Fold” Placement - Move important information high on the page to make it visible for your visitors to see.
Tagline - A striking tagline can help your site stand-out. This will also help your visitors remember your site easily.
Reduce your Graphics - Keep your site Graphics at minimum unless if you are running a PhotoBlog or a Photo Gallery. This will help load your site faster.
Keep your Site Organized - No one wants to see a cluttered website. If you have banners then keep them at one place and make sure they do not interfere with your content.
Make yourself Brandable - You have to convey trust to your readers. The world wide web is overcrowded, make sure you give your readers reasons to keep visiting your site.

I like the “popular posts” idea. Like you said ‘best foot forward’. Nothing says “run away” for a blog like a billion posts without any comments the first time you visit.
