Blog on Something you are Passionate About
Do not base your topics on high-paying keywords alone.. if you keep doing this, your blog is no better than MFA sites. Instead, talk about something that you’re truly interested in so as not to add garbage information on the web.
Promote your Blog
You may have good Quality content but if nobody knows your site then nothing will happen. Do not rely on Search Engines alone as competition is definitely steep nowadays. Be as visible as possible on the blogosphere.. comment on other sites, advertise, join forums and even consider offline advertising.
Expecting Immediate Results
Never expect results overnight! This will only discourage you to move forward and work harder. Therefore, be patient. Even if we have exerted all our time and effort, always remember to give it time to grow.
Monetize Wisely
Monetizing our blogs should be done wisely. If adsense does not really work with the kind of niche that you have, then try other options. Try to research on Banner Advertising, Link Sales and even affiliates programs that might work for you.

I’ve started a few blogs about topic I’m interested in. The promoting part is so important! If you don’t gain readers you’ll have no motivation to continue writing.

Some great advice here. Leaving comments is the number one way for a new blogger to get their name out there, in my opinion. Particularly if you can find a nofollow-free site, but even the nofollow links are still valuable for attracting attention.
